Time for Class! Sign up and learn a bit more about music and the violin in this series of casual, informative classes.

You do not need to be a violin student to attend some of these classes, however we will be looking at music through the violin with emphasis on the violin. Where experience is required or recommended, it is mentioned in the description of the class, otherwise classes are open to everyone who is interested regardless of experience. To sign up for any class, please submit the tuition fee, this will reserve your seat. Please continue to scroll down for a listing of Workshop classes.

about your teacher : ed davis

Over the past years, I've been delighted to help people make music an active part of their lives. I've been teaching privately for over 20 years in Seattle and Olympia Washington, and Eugene Oregon. While in Eugene I taught for the 4J School District as an orchestra director and conducted sectionals and auditions for the Eugene Youth Symphony. I've also been on the faculty of the Suzuki Institute of Seattle, Tacoma Youth Symphony Music Camp and director of the Thalia Olympic Music Camp. Click here to read more about me.


how to enroll in a class & cancellation policy

To enroll in any class, please click the "Enroll" button and your class will be added to a shopping cart. Once you have finished selecting classes and made the tuition, you place in the class is reserved. It is recommended to reserve your place early by submitting tuition in advance, however you may come and make tuition (cash only) at the door without guaranteed seating.

Please note that class size is limited and there is no refund for canceling out of or missing a workshop class, however you may give you place in class to another if they meet the prerequisites for the class.

Dirty Violin!

Prerequisite:
This class is open to everyone!
Required Materials: Please bring your violin, a soft towel large enough to place your violin on (to cushion it on the table), some small rags (cotton, an old cut up t-shirt is good). Polishes and other supplies will be provided.
Class Title: Dirty Violin!
Class Summary:

In this class, we will learn to safely remove your chin rest, tailpiece, strings and pegs. We will then do a thorough cleaning of the parts and violin and polishing of your violin, as well as some minor scratch repair. We will lubricate the pegs, bridge and nut, which will allow your strings and pegs to move more effortlessly, as well as lightly oil your fingerboard, tailpiece and chinrest. Your violin will be like new...well, within reason, but it will look a lot better and also more importantly, it will work better!

Class Title: Seeing, Touching and Hearing More in Music
Class Summary:

In this class we'll be listening to various works and learning about how a composer uses the palette of the the voice, violin and other instruments to create color and mood, concrete representations and abstract ideas. Pieces we'll be hearing range from Medieval to Modern, Classical to Rock.

Tuition: $24 (Save with a "Day Pass", attend all classes for the day.)

Class Title: Beginner Music Theory
Class Summary:

Become familiarized with note reading and basic rhythm as it applies to the violin. Learn about the treble clef, the staff, and many music symbols and their meaning. Strategies on how to approach learning an unfamiliar piece of music.

Theory 1 and Violin 1a (Beginner Violin) and Violin 1b, or familiarity with violin fingering and note names in the first position.
Required Materials: You will be sent printouts sometime prior to the class, please print and bring!
Class Title: Rhythm and What Key Signatures Do
Class Summary:

Learn about your violin and the fingering of a C scale. See what different key signatures and accidentals do to the arrangement of your fingers on the instrument. Introduction to the Circle of Fifths. Learn about slurring, articulation, subdivision and dotted rhythm.

Class Title: Speech, Inflection and Singing
Class Summary:

Recognizing pitch, like playing an instrument, is developed with time and care. In this class we will be going through some simple exercises designed to first open our ears to natural inflection in speech. From there we will be singing a bit and developing our voices. No worries if you feel you can't sing, join this class and you just may leave humming....

Class Title: Inflection and Expression, Singing and Playing
Class Summary:

In this class we will be developing ideas presented in Intonation 1 and applying these techniques to your instrument. We will be having some "musical conversations" with our violins and working on materials that aid in enhancing pitch recognition.

Master Class

Prerequisite:
This 2 hour class is open to anyone wishing to observe the process of learning the violin.
Optional Materials:
You may wish to bring paper and pencil to class to take notes, a sound recorder is welcome but please no video without the consent of the participant. If you wish to know what works will be studied during class, please write 1-2 weeks before the class you are attending.
Class Summary:

In this 2 hour Master Class, we will be focusing the lesson on 3-6 individuals who receive lessons in turn while the class observes, we will be working on issues that perhaps many students may also be grappling with. Think of this class as a sort of "private lesson" in a group setting. Students who observe will notice that much can be gleaned from watching a colleague learn. If you wish to be considered for participation (limited number), please write. This class may be taught by a guest artist. There will be a short intermission about half-way through the class.

improvisation

Improvisation 1

Prerequisite:
Violin 1a (Beginner Violin) or knowledge of basic violin playing (about 3-4 months of lessons), advanced players may also get something out of this class as well as new students. Optional: Listening 1 is recommended to precede this class.
Required Materials: Violin or Viola.
Class Title: Creating Textures, Shapes and Exploring Sound and Space in Music
Class Summary:

In this class we will be learning to create various sound textures and shapes, and exploring how these sounds can create contrast, accord and drama in music. We will also be considering how various techniques of bowing and fingering make musical color, and becoming better aware of how color, shape and texture influences a musical experience.

Improvisation 2

Class Title: Separating and Blending, Movement in a Musical Space
Class Summary:

In this class we will be reviewing concepts presented in Improvisation 1 and working on note-based improvisation techniques. We will be looking at how to move and create shape using notes, rhythm and texture, and what separates or blends musical ideas.
