When sub-dividing, one first step could be to look at the passage you wish to sub-divide and find the shortest note value. Let's say that the shortest note value you see is a 16th note. To find the number of counts in most common notes you may find on the page, simply read down from the top of the "Sixteenth" column. A Whole note will then receive 16 counts, a Dotted Quarter will receive 6, Dotted Eighth, 3, etc.
